The photo session at the First Moscow Hospice started in May, 2019 with a kind blessing from Nuta Federmesser, head of the Palliative care Center of Moscow, and it still goes on for almost two years not only in Moscow, but also in Pskov, Saint-Petersburg and other locations.

Two days after the session started a strange feeling appeared that the place was absolutely radiant. I will try to explain. At first one walks on tip-toes, trying not to look around, avoiding eye-eye glances with the patients, picks up the smells the cruel decease here and there, testifies mortal fatigue and almost total helplessness around. But, no, there is no bustle around, people are not separated one from the other, patients do not seem to feel abandoned, it is absolutely evident that all the required help will be rendered then and there. Instantly. Both the personnel on the one hand and the patients together with their next of kin on the other hand feel drawn to one another. There is empathy and friendliness; there is not only compassion, but also respect and mutual trust. There are handshakes and hugs. And one hears Nicolay’s demanding voice ‘I want to have a photo together with my doctor!’ There are smiles and happiness due to the mere fact that they are still alive.

The people working there live a part of each patient’s life, the part which may become the most significant for a given patient even though that part in most cases is rather short. And it does become really significant for them. There are no accidental people among the staff.

There are some who have come to stay, and there are those who have left. It is a hard job there, but those who have decided to stay, usually do not leave afterwards.

Practically the staff people do not remember the last names of those who have passed away (as they say it there), but they do remember the first names, and say, Natasha and Slava, Rosa, Nadezhda and Sergey, Jennifer. And they remember their faces, faces, faces.

The author expresses his deep gratitude to the patients who agreed to be photographed and made it possible to happen, to their relatives who have allowed to publish the photos made, to all the staff working at the hospices and Vera Fund who have not only gave their consent to take part in the session, but have also rendered invaluable help and support.

Съемка в Первом Московском Хосписе началась в Мае 2019 года с благословения Нюты Федермессер. И продолжается уже почти два года не только в Москве, но и во Пскове, в Петербурге и других местах.

Самое неожиданное впечатление возникло вдруг через два дня после начала съемки, около полудня среды – это светлое место. Попробую объяснить. Сначала ходишь «на цыпочках», лишний раз не посмотришь в сторону, не задержишь взгляд на человеке лишнюю секунду, часто тяжелые запахи нездоровья, усталость от болезни и почти полная беспомощность вокруг. Но, нет суеты, отделенности людей друг от друга, есть готовность помочь и есть необходимая помощь. Прямо сейчас. Есть расположение пациентов и их родных и сотрудников друг к другу. Есть любезность и сочувствие. Не только как жалость, но как сопереживание. Рукопожатия и объятия. И строгий возглас Николая Ивановича – я хочу сфотографироваться со своим врачом! Есть улыбки и радость от ощущения жизни.

Сотрудники за то, в основном недолгое время, что пациент находится в хосписе, проживают с ним часть жизни, которая, может быть, станет самой значительной для него. И часто становится очень значимой для них самих.

Среди сотрудников нет случайных людей. Есть те, кто остался, и были те, кто ушел. Там трудно, но оставшись, как правило, не уходят. Там плохо запоминают фамилии ушедших пациентов – так говорят об умерших – и их близких, но многие годы помнят имена – Наташа и Слава, Роза, Наталья Владимировна, Надежда и Сергей, Дженифер.
И помнят лица, лица, лица.

Автор выражает глубокую признательность пациентам, позволившим и захотевшим фотографироваться, их родственникам и близким, давшим согласие на публикацию фотографий, всем сотрудникам хосписа и фонда «Вера», не только согласившимся принять участие в съемках, но оказывающим неоценимую помощь и поддержку.
