ABOUT

Hello, my name is Alexey Konin. I was born in Moscow in 1965. My childhood and youth were spent in the very centre of Moscow in the little streets around the Arbat. I graduated from the Institute for Asian and African Studies at Moscow State University.

My parents told me that according to their architect friends I could draw quite well as a child. However, I only tried my hand at drawing again when I was about 30.

After my studies and until the very end of my «normal life» as a hired office worker, I travelled around a lot, inside Russia as well as outside. That was when I started taking my first pictures. At first, I just had a run-of-the-mill camera but then after a few duty-free cocktails in an international airport on a trip to Paris, I bought a simple Canon reflex camera. This is where it all really began. Then, after some six or seven years, I quit my regular office job and said goodbye to my settled way of living. I even moved to Saint Petersburg.

I have been taking pictures for some 20 years now. Somewhere during that time I became a free-lance photographer and member of the Union of Artists. For a while I taught photography at the Department of Graphical Design of the Saint Petersburg Stieglitz State Academy of Art and Design (formerly the Mukhina Institute).

I really love to take pictures and for the most part I do black-and-white photography. I shoot everything that interests me — people, architecture, portraits, landscapes, social documentaries and just everyday life or whatever at first sight might seem so. I love to capture the life behind the curtains of the circus, the ballet, sports, the life that’s just a little bit hidden from normal view and of course I shoot music, mainly jazz and classical, from the inside the orchestra and almost from inside the sound.

Some of the best work I did was at my own leisurely pace to take pictures of the house of the brilliant architect Konstantin Melnikov in Moscow and of all of his other buildings. Also, the frescoes of the 12th century Convent of Saint Euphrosyne in Polotsk, Byelorussia and the frescoes of the 14th century Snetogorsky Monastery in Pskov, Russia.

I take a lot of pictures of doctors and hospital situations, maybe because as a child I always wanted to become a doctor.

Also, these last few years, I took pictures of people finding themselves in dramatic situations. A good deal of my work is connected to the charity foundation «Podari Zhizn» (a leading children’s cancer foundation in Russia and the sister charity to the UK’s Gift of Life) and to the Hospice Charity Fund «Vera».

This is important to me and I think on the whole, in our country, we still turn our backs to easily when confronted with issues like these. Unfortunately, we mostly turn our backs  on the people having to deal on a personal level with these issues. Even someone with the most dire of diagnoses is still a human being, living, feeling, loving and rejoicing; often more intensely and deeply than before.

In the last ten years I had a number of personal exhibitions and I also took part in some collective exhibitions in Moscow, Saint Petersburg, Milan, Pskov, Velikiye Luki and Nevel (Pskov region).

In my master-classes I enthusiastically and gladly share all I know about photography.

Some of my pictures are in the collections of the Russian Museum in Saint Petersburg, in the Russian State Library in Moscow, in the State Literary Museum in Moscow and in a number of private collections in Russia and abroad.

I will be happy to share my pictures with you. So, welcome to my site!
